Discover how a personalized approach not only secured accommodations but empowered the family and fostered meaningful collaboration with school personnel, setting the stage for lasting success.
Like many parents of students with ADHD, this family knew their child had immense potential but faced roadblocks from a school system reluctant to provide support. Despite a private psycho-educational report and the pediatrician's diagnosis of ADHD, the school repeatedly denied the parents' request for an evaluation under Section 504. Instead, the school dismissed their concerns by citing the student’s “good grades,” ignoring her struggles with focus, organization, time on task completion, and impulsivity.
The family felt frustrated and angry because their voice was unheard, and unsure of how to proceed. They needed a knowledgeable advocate to help them navigate the complex educational system and secure the support their child needed.
Obstacles Faced:
School Resistance
The school administration continuously delayed the Section 504 evaluation request, focusing solely on academic grades and overlooking the student’s ADHD-related challenges.
Parental Struggles
The parents lacked confidence in advocating for accommodations during parent/teacher meetings and were unfamiliar with the intricacies of Section 504 law.
Erosion of Trust
The repeated resistance and delays of an Section 504 evaluation led to a breakdown in trust between the family and school personnel, making productive communication difficult.
With compassion and strategic advocacy, I worked closely with the family to secure essential educational support. My customized advocacy plan included the following:
Listening and Understanding First
I took time to listen and understand their experiences, fears, and frustrations. Parents need to feel heard and that is what I do.
Comprehensive Information Review
I thoroughly reviewed the private psycho-educational report, medical records, academic records, test scores, and correspondence between the family and the school.
Strategic Advocacy
I researched, developed, and executed tailored advocacy strategies to effectively present the student’s case and advocate for prompt Section 504 evaluation and accommodations.
Personalized Support Plan
I collaborated with the family and the school to develop an individualized Section 504 Accommodation Plan that addressed the student’s specific challenges.
504 Eligibility Secured and Accommodations Provided
The student was granted eligibility under Section 504 when information from a variety of sources, which is required by law, was evaluated. This included reviewing more than just her academic grades. The student was provided legal protection and essential accommodations, including:
Extended time on tests, homework, and classwork
Small group settings for testing
Preferential seating
Additional accommodations tailored to the student’s unique needs
Improvement in Student Academic Performance
With the appropriate accommodations in place, the student experienced
significant improvements in:
Focus
Reduced distractions during class time and when taking assessments.
Organization
Better task management and timely completion of assignments.
Impulsivity
Improved ability to regulate responses and behaviors.
Student Success
Equal access to her education was ensured for her the same as a non-disabled student.
Parents Felt Empowered
Through collaboration, I helped to empower the parents by explaining their rights under Section 504, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to advocate for their child’s needs.
Stronger School Collaboration
Because of my involvement in the Section 504 process from start to finish, the school administration became more cooperative with the parents and receptive to the student’s needs.
Due to confidentiality and respect for the parents we excluded the names.
